Utilization
"UTILIZATION IS THE ACT OF USING PROCESSES AND RESOURCES FOR LEARNING" (SEELS & RICHEY, 1994, P. 46)
Utilization in instructional design includes using materials and ID theories correctly to promote learning. The correct use of both materials and theories is important because both of these concepts can be implemented, but its the proper use of them that eventually facilitate learning.
Utilization Task Reflection
As i reflect on my time in this program I realize that I had very little prior knowledge in relation to this task. I have had very little experience with media utilization, but that was a subtask that I felt came easy to understand. Now that my time in the program is coming to an end I realize that proper knowledge of this task is crucial. Especially when it comes to policies and regulations. Personally I have still only had a little experience with this subtask, but I understand that knowledge of your institutions policies will come a long way when designing an instructional program. The artifacts I attached touch base on the subtask associated, but this is a task I need to continue to learn more about and understand. I feel as if I learned the necessary knowledge, but there is a large amount of content that I could be better at implementing.
Media utilization
"Media utilization is the systematic use of resources for learning" (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 46)
This assignment discusses the different types of software evaluation. It also discusses personal examples and the "pros & cons" of those examples. This relates to this standard because you should have a systematic approach when it comes to evaluating something. This assignment goes through those approaches and when its best to use them.
diffusion of innovations
"Diffusion of innovations is the process of communicating through planned strategies for the purpose of gaining adoption" (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 46)
For this assignment I was tasked with creating a powerpoint to gain familiarity with software to assist with future applications of multimedia content. I continued to gain background in methods to enhance my use of multimedia throughout the first 6 competencies. Competency 7 put everything together into 1 PowerPoint presentation and while there was no instruction to be had, I gained the ability to work on my skills with multimedia.
implementation and institutionalization
"Implementation is using instructional materials or strategies in real (not simulated) settings. Institutionalization is the continuing, routine use of the instructional innovation in the structure and culture of an organization" (Seels & Richey, 1994, p.47)
I created this presentation for a group of undergraduate students that are in HNFE and currently work with VT Football as athletic training student aides. I used instructional strategies throughout the presentation like Kellers ARC of motivation by describing on the second slide what information we would cover throughout. I used multimedia in this presentation so the use of that principle was in effect as well. While I realize that I could have added much more instructional design theories, I was still a novice in terms of IT.
policies and regulations
"Policies and regulations are the rules and actions of society (or its surrogates) that affect the diffusion and use of Instructional Technology" (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 47)
In these assignments I refreshed my memory on ethical problems and solutions in the world of IT. The assignments discussed ethical standards as well as plagairism as a whole. These assignements relate directly to this subtask as they were the few that discussed policies and regulations both within and outside of instructional technology.
